On August 1st 1976 a magazine launched, that would change the face of Japanese menswear forever. Popeye, with its famous tagline "Magazine for City Boys", captured the imagination of an entire generation of young men in Japan, who were struck with boredom and anxiety in the face of an impending future as 'salarymen'. The name of the publication has nothing to do with the sailor man per se, but is rather a play on words, indicating that the creators keep an 'eye' on 'pop' culture.

The first issue focused heavily on Californian lifestyle, Los Angeles in particular, presenting UCLA college life, the Lakers, skateboarding, Nike sneakers and much more. It was magazines like Popeye, which allowed young Japanese men to get their first glimpses into foreign lifestyles and nurtured countless style savants and eventual creators. It is safe to say that without Popeye, global menswear wouldn't be nearly as advanced as it is today.

Condition:

The copy up for sale has major signs of wear and tear, which is expected for a product this old. Lots of creases and bended corners. No pages are missing. The color of the prints is also in good condition. It is perfectly readable.
