Japanese fashion magazine smart never disappoints. Published in January 1999, issue No. 52 features tons of amazing street style and fashion content from late 90s Japan, which some might argue was the best era in men's street style ever around the world.
On the cover, Kaori Kawamura – a half Japanese, half Russian rock and pop singer, who lost a battle to cancer in 2009 – shows us some edge and hints at one of the major topics in this issue, leather jackets. In addition to shining a light on the biker staple, smart magazine no. 52 features a massive street style section, where patrons from major Japanese cities, all the way to Paris and New York present their outfits. An extensive booklet inside, titled "Harajuku & Daikanyama Perfect Shop Guide 100", gives us one of the best and most comprehensive looks at the Tokyo retail landscape in 1999, including the presentation of tons of stores, complete with a map, addresses, and a look at some products and staff members at the time. You can find full scans of this shop guide in our Vanitasism blog.
